PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is coming to Xbox One later this year, but the developers of the popular “battle royale” title may take multi-platform to the next level with cross-platform play.
Executive Producer of PUBG, Chang Han Kim, commented on the potential of Battlegrounds cross platform play. Although a technically simple feature, there are logistical and gameplay-oriented issues with merging platforms’ gameplay.
“But… when you consider the competitive side of the game, I do feel that there’s a balance issue between controllers and keyboard and mouse. That’s what’s making it difficult for us to do right away. If we’re going to allow players to use controllers we need to have the aim assist added in and things like that. We’re not going to be supporting it right away, but it’s something we’d like to look into later.”
So it appears that Battlegrounds will run into a similar issue as other shooters: the conflict between controller and mouse/keyboard. It is possible that the developers could create isolated matchmaking hoppers and experiences for players on separate platforms to match and compete against one another.
Minecraft and Rocket League have joined the ranks of cross-platform compatible games, and many fans should hope PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds does the same.
