Any idea what ranks the other players were in your placement games? If you're only beating Golds/Diamonds, you won't place directly into Onyx. Quote Share this post Link to post
Cursed Lemon Posted March 3, 2016 No, I'm legitimately trying to help contribute to discussion with the intent of allowing us to move competitive Halo 5 in a direction that is both healthy for the longevity of the game and fun to play/watch. I'm trying to do this with the context that I've been exposed to the inner workings and decision making processes taking place at 343. Unfortunately everything I say is disregarded immediately for that very reason. And yet you have a starkly negative attitude to my particularly optimistic viewpoint that the casual appeal of a game does not need to come at the expense of its competitive edge. All I've gotten from you on the subject is a lot of hand-waving and firmly declaring. "nope, not possible", without any reasonable explanation as to why that is so. You haven't said anything that is able to be disregarded, because...well, you haven't said anything. All you've done is pull the tired old angle of, "look guys, I tooootally know how this works on the insides, and just trust me, it works this way". Not satisfactory, and that you expect it to be is baffling. You are not in a position of greater regard, you are in a position of greater scrutiny, and I'm so terribly sorry that you didn't realize it until after you got out, but guess what? "It just works that way." This forum has the ability to have a profound impact on the direction of the Halo franchise. Making that happen will require compromise, period... I've accepted that. I don't know in what section of your brain that the idea of "profound change through compromise" makes any sense at all, but as I've said time and time again, there is exactly zero proof that anything we've said about the competitive aspects of Halo has made it into the game. This is the point where you, as others have done, will inevitably tell me to look at the changes between Halo 4 and Halo 5. Clearly it was made with a competitive bend, right? Except that no one on this forum to my knowledge wanted sprint to continue, no one asked for a buffed thruster, no one asked for clambering, no one asked for slide, no one asked for charge, no one asked for a bunch of redundant weapons and a 3-tiered system, no one asked for the worst sniper in history and a generally bad aim assist situation...no one asked for any of this shit. This was all stuff that was crammed into H5 at no one's behest except for Microsoft's stormtroopers. The last three Halo games (arguably even the last four) have been reflections of what's hot in the gaming industry at the time, and to try to obfuscate that fact is to insult the intelligence of everyone here. Nevermind the fact that Josh and Frankie routinely ignore some of the most informative material on this forum with exactly zero acknowledgement. No, it is not good enough to say, "yeah we definitely read everything", but remark on almost nothing. There is no confirmation that our individual ideas are considered, or even appreciated. And I don't give a flying fuck about protocol. If peoples' lips are sealed over some things, that's their problem, not mine. Because all the proof I need is the state of the game itself. @@Sal1ent didn't come here for any reason other than his love for Halo and desire to make it a bad ass game. I didn't drop everything and move from Georgia to Washington for any other reason than to try and contribute to the franchise I love. So what? You think I wouldn't hop on the train at 343 to try to improve the Halo franchise? The difference is that I would've gotten fired on the spot when someone in the board room said, "we're going to create a microtransaction system, put most of our development resources into it, and release the game in an emaciated state". So, while you and I may love Halo the same amount, you tell me which one of us has more respect for it. 19 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Cooper Posted March 3, 2016 Though I don't disagree, unfortunately what we as a community need to understand is that balance isn't the only thing that matters anymore. Sure it's the most important aspect of the game in regards to the game's competitiveness, there are so many other factors the developer has to and will inevitably consider. And this is why the competitive parts of the game should not be using default settings. Quote Share this post Link to post

One could argue Breakout was the same in terms of high level play involving it. I dunno. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NavG123 Posted March 3, 2016 In a lobby of full champions in FFA on Overgrowth, the person who won the game had zero, ZERO headshots. That person clearly used the map and weapons to his or her advantage and dominated us. I took this quote from a Waypoint thread with the intention to make fun of it but now I want to make a comment on it. This person is defending the layout of Overgrowth by saying that the person who won "used the map and weapons to his or her advantage". The issue being that it takes nearly 0 skill to take advantage of sword-sprinting on the map. I have 2-3 videos of me getting sprees-frenzies by doing no thought or effort aside from sprinting at anyone I saw. Here's my problem; you have an entire community of people arguing for these features based on complete misunderstandings or misconceptions about how "high-level play" works. This person in particular has said he was Champion (or in a lobby of champions), so I can only assume he's a little on the dumb side. My favorite: "The pistol is harder to use than the BR" "A 'skilled' pistol user will kill a BR user" There are some hardcore mental gymnastics going on here to actually convince someone that somebody who is a "skilled pistol user" will have the advantage as opposed to if he had a BR. Never-mind the idea that someone who is good at using the pistol will also be equally good at using the easier BR. They seem to live in some sort of fantasy-land where the "skilled" player always wins, and that everything is just. Another classic: Let's say... "A player shouldn't be allowed to be so deadly with a storm rifle+ radar combo while camping a corner." They say... "A good player would have the awareness to know someone is in that corner." I've heard it multiple times that somehow "good" players are meant to be omnipotent in discussions regarding radar. I find it extremely hard to believe that anyone who has ever said something along these lines is themselves a "good player". I think it's pretty safe to say that these misconceptions make up the majority of arguments that are pro-current sandbox. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
