Halo 5: Guardians Discussion

Recommended Posts

Invasion > Warzone, any day of the week.

Maybe they could blend the two together somehow.

You people should know but now that any discussion of invasion forces me to get involved...

As far as combining the two goes, I'm not really feeling it. I'm not sure there's anything that warzone does that invasion needs to do. Big maps? The mod initially had the largest in the series up to that point. Variety of weapons? Invasion arguably does this better than warzone because of the set classes rather than random req point weapon variant garbage.

Invasion deserved to be its own mode more than warzone ever will. I know it's very different from regular halo but at the same time it's not as different as warzone is. Like with invasion you can still have weapons and vehicles on the map. The fact that it's classes are set and not customizable is another big difference. I know in either scenario predictability is going to be harder in comparison to plain old identical spawning, but one is less random than the other by its very nature.

I always thought invasion had a lot of potential as a mode but it all basically got pissed away after reach. Hell, during reach it only had 3 dev maps. The rest were decent AT BEST forge maps.

Reach is my favorite game in the series for quite a few things outside of actual gameplay.

Love the art direction, love the grittiness of it, love the armor permutations, favorite UI, I even enjoyed invasion to some degree (only played it with my nephew who wasn't very good, but loved the gametype).

Reach has the best art style, graphics, UI, physics(both Spartan and vehicle), game sound, player profiles in Halo history. Default Reach game play is cancer, but TU DMR start(BTB) is tolerable, at least much more fun than anything Halo 4 or Halo 5 have to offer. Imagine how amazing Reach would look in 1080p and 60 FPS.

I agree with everything except for Reach's art style, game sound, and its Spartan physics. I know the game takes place during the Fall of Humanity's greatest militaristic source, but its dull colors and grit seen in generic "realistic" Shooters felt really out of place, in a franchise known for bright colors, simplistic geometry, and religious symbolism; and while Halo has never really had a "consistent" art style (the only valid visual consistency is within the gap between Halo Ce > Halo 2, and even Halo 2 made some drastic changes) UNSC/Covenant designs are among the most inconsistent I've ever seen from a Halo game not made by 343i, or the Anniversary titles. The game sound was good - a step up from Halo 3's peashooter automatics, but I'm not sure if I would call it the best. Halo 2 had smoother, slicker Spartan physics (if by physics, you mean how the player responds).

To me, each new Bungie Halo game's art style and graphics were an improvement over the previous game, mainly as technology improved. I love Reach's cool and realistic art style, which makes the game feel really serious, which I think it should since it's a FPS game. I used to think Halo 2 had great physics, but then MCC came out and the physics seemed dated, or maybe the vista version just sucks that bad. It's been forever since I've played the OG Xbox Halo 2(which I absolutely loved).

I would have to put H3 and CE above Reach in terms of art style in general, but Reach still looks nice and unlike H4/H5 doesn't make my eyes bleed. Aside from the FUCKING MOTION BLUR.

The only thing I remember really liking about Reach compared to other Halo games was the campaign.

Multiplayer was awful for me, and I spent a lot of time in misery during that game.  Even NBNS was bad.

I enjoyed Halo 4 Slayer Pro way more than any Reach gametype.

The logic that "it's an FPS, therefore, it must be serious" doesn't really set well with me, because it's the equivalent of saying, "Medieval and Fantasy settings are the norm of RPGs, so RPGs should be based on said settings". It's a video game, first and foremost; it doesn't need to be serious, especially when it still has aliens shooting pink, blue, and green weaponry, exaggerated ragdoll physics, and contradicts previous established canon about how the Invasion of Reach happen in the novel (it even contradicts lore from previous titles, mainly CE). Many FPS games during the '90s strove themselves to be fun, memorable games, rather than being realistic and serious.

  • Doom: a series about a space-marine literally going to hell, just to laid waste to all satanic beings.
  • Quake: each game has a different story (excluding MP-driven Quake 3); all of them playing out the same way.
  • Duke Nukem: a muscular blondie who "kicks ass and chews bubblegum... and he's all out of gum".

Timesplitters (mostly Future Perfect) is a prime example of an FPS which rarely takes itself serious. People adore the series because it offered so much in content, and it was all unlockable. No microtransactions, DLC, or any of that corporate greed players have to comply with in today's gaming generation, in order to get the full, definitive experience.

Don't quote me on this, but Half-Life might be one of the earliest FPS games to actually have a serious narrative. Although, it still didn't place much emphasis on realism, or making the game look gritty.

Halo didn't need low-intensity colors to feel serious. Its A.I. (Halo: CE still has the best iteration of the Covenant, bar none, the Sangheili especially), dynamic level design, and Marty O'Donnell's legendary composition, all did a good job capturing that feeling.

Now, as for Halo 2's physics... The glitches you could pull off on the OG Xbox version were fun. Super-bounce, Wraith-Scorpion Launch, etc.

Please don't give 343 Incompetencies any more ideas on how to further shit on franchise. They've done enough.

Hmm, its almost like your favorite parts of the game were the actually innovative parts that didn't fuck with the core mechanics?

Reach (similar to H5) was such a frustrating experience for me.  If they just got rid of bloom and the armor abilities, it could have been a really fucking good Halo game.

the only things i thought reach did really well were the story and the co-op campaign matchmaking. co-op campaign was some of the best times i had with 3 but since all of my friends moved on after that, that experience has gone. I've been disappointed that none of the other titles have had that but i'm not surprised that we've lost features as the years have gone on either. the reach ui was good too.

the seasonal story mode was a cool idea from 4 that wouldve been nice if the story had actually been good

Other than Zealot and spire all of those maps are primarily gray and brown.... powerhouse has a little green i guess. Anchor 9's actual play space is all shades of gray.

Most forge maps were rather gray.  The aesthetic style of Reach was probably the least of its problems, but to say that is has a "fuck load of colors that pop amazingly" is overstating it quite a bit.

H3 looked better by far imo.

Most of those colors are very muted shades of pastel.  Even the colorful maps look dreary in Reach.

Which isn't a bad thing, but "colorful" is not the word that comes to mind when thinking about that game.  H3 is probably still the best depiction, I think, of Halo. Reach follows closely.

I dunno, seems to me Reach and 3 are similar colour wise more often than not.

Reach might be slightly more muted at times but really I think it's because we see more human stuff than Covie/Forerunner in Reach

Rewatching Red vs Blue a few years ago is what convinced me that Halo 3 looked superior to Reach. It was much easier for me to focus on the visuals without having to worry about gameplay. Even just walking through the maps in a custom game doesn't let me get the same experience as watching the show. Each new game introduced was a clear progression over the previous one in art style until Reach, where the aesthetic just completely nose dive. Like I don't even think it's very close between the two games. I guess it didn't help that those episodes were filmed on an ugly Forge map in Reach, but even the Spartans- especially the Spartans- just look way better in Halo 3 than in any other Halo game.

The Spartan models in Halo 4 were so bad that I had to quit watching, and I haven't tried to get caught up since.

I never said Reach didn't have bright colors. I meant that its colors are usually washed-out and don't have as much intensity as they did in the previous games.

Zealot is remake, so that doesn't count. The only map that really stands out is Skybox, but that was just the background of the map. Not the actual map itself.

It's definitely more colorful than the typical brown and gray Dudebro Shooters.

Highlands is grey and green instead of grey and brown

Unearthed is still just grey and brown....

I dont think reach was a bad looking game, but i'm sorry it did not have a wide color pallet.

Halo 3 is still the "This is what Halo should look like" game to me.

Reach has a fuck load of colours that pop amazingly. It's equally if not more colourful than the OG trilogy.

Reach is a beautiful game for 2010 Xbox 360, and artistically it's one of the best looking depiction of a sci-fi universe I have ever seen.

Reach to me is a clear elaboration on Bungies perceived vision on the art of Halo since the beginning.

All I saw was gray and tan.  And some occasional purple and orange.

I would not say Reach is all that colorful.  I'd say C.E. is much more colorful. Have you even seen all the red on Chiron?  Or all the green glow from the teleporters on Boarding action? It's like you haven't even played Halo Jaun.

Highlands is grey and green instead of grey and brown

Unearthed is still just grey and brown....

I dont think reach was a bad looking game, but i'm sorry it did not have a wide color pallet.

Halo 3 is still the "This is what Halo should look like" game to me.

And C.E. is the "This is what Halo should play like" game.  They should borrow from each other's good qualities and become H6.  Haha RIP.
