Repopulate Halo 2 Vista

Here's a guide I found and tweaked a year or two ago. It appears like it may still work although I haven't verified it since I already have a unique key from years ago.

I hope this helps and feel free to add it to anything you do in the future. We must rebuild H2 Vista and this thread deserves more attention.

Thanks for the link. Sadly, cdaction.pl no longer has any GFWL titles that could work for H2. I managed to retrieve one years ago when they still had Kane and Lynch. They do have Tropico 3, but I have already attempted to see if that would work. Sadly, H2V says the keys are invalid, when trying to use the keys regularly without the GFWL registry hack.

I am looking at something new right now, but I may need a few people to donate some keys. If you would like to donate, PM me. I have a feeling that the source issue is either that the keys generated by the keygen is somewhat blacklisted, causing the game to run in a "trial" mode, or the registry values in xox.reg may be causing a duplicated like issue like I noticed with the Product ID before.

The game is mad fun, and it's great experiencing Halo 2 in crisp, 60FPS. It's hard to play H2 Xbox after playing H2V a lot imo. Hopefully, I can improve the game experience so that others can enjoy it without getting dropped in games.

Did you activate a key on the Live account you are using previously? Not trying to question the life out of you just trying to figure out why you didn't have to enter a key.

For anyone who has purchased a product key (universal or physical copy of h2), PM me need to ask you a question.

Nope never activated a key before. Even decided to try the install on a friends laptop with his account (he also never activated a key) and the same exact thing happened.

Gotcha. I am working on something new, and will need a few people to test, so if anyone is interested, PM me.

That's sad to hear they don't give out keys anymore it makes me wish I had grabbed a few more at least. I only have the key that I got for myself so I can't really help you there, sorry.

Depending on what's involved I'l help you test. Anything to get more people playing is a good thing.

PM'ed you. I may have finally found a mass solution to the disconnection issue, but I need others to test it as well. Only a handful of people needed.

EDIT: No longer need people to conduct the test I have planned. If someone cannot make it, I will edit THIS post.

I love playing in 60Fps and 1080p or 720p, Looks like a whole new game TBH and when people watch my stream they ask how its so sharp, I am going to make a Halo 2 Pc Customs Thread so we can just invite people, Might make a silver account and just add people and they can just add people off its friends list.

I have played Halo 2 pc in the past, however I installed it on my high spec PC again just now and I am seeing weird things. I tried using both mouse and keyboard, as well as an xbox one controller plugged in via usb and the game ran really slow. Not framerates, they were fine (I even tried turning Vsync ON to lock the frames at 60fps rather than running higher).

The actual movement speed was so shit. I had it side by side with H2 on xbox and it was significantly slower base speed.

I was also messing around with BXB on a half empty clip and it wouldnt register the 2nd B button press if I did it too quickly, which I thought was weird. Has anyone heard or seen any of this?

This thread is devoted to showing how to setup and configure a Halo 2 Vista dedicated server on your computer. The video guide shows how to do it on Windows 8.1, though the guide here and on YouTube should be compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well.

System Requirements to run a server in LAN mode:

  • 1.7 gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 40 GB hard drive capacity, with 15 GB free space
  • Network card (Ethernet or wireless, though Ethernet is highly recommended)
  • OS: Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server

In addition, this is what is required to run a server in LIVE mode:

  • Broadband internet connection. Make sure your ISP is compatible with Xbox Live. Consult your ISP for more information.
  • A Silver or Gold Xbox/Windows Live account, that is not banned or on account hold (lack of payment)
  • Halo 2 for Windows Vista product key. You can use the same key that came with your game. You can also use select older Games for Windows Live product keys from different games to activate it (e.g. using Resident Evil 5 PC key will work for Halo 2).

Halo 2 for Windows Vista Dedicated Server Installation Guide Video:

Installing the Dedicated Server to run as a Windows Service in LIVE mode:
Halo 2 for Windows Vista torrent: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/4363620/HALO_2_for_windows_vista_(pc)
Halo 2 Dedicated Server update: http://h2v.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=2236

DiabloVixen's Playlist Creator: http://www.mediafire.com/download/74112hf55uzsqsr/Playlist_Creator.exe

  1. Open your Halo 2 Vista installer folder.
  2. Launch startup.exe. Select Install Dedicated Server for Halo 2
  3. Click More Options and confirm the installation directory. For those on
    64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server
    32-bit Windows C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server
Also, check/uncheck if you want the server service to be accessible by other users on your computer. Afterwards, click Next. The installation will begin. The installation process should only take a few minutes. When it is complete, I highly suggest viewing the Read-Me file.
  4. Go to http://h2v.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=2236 and download the October 2007 server update. After downloading, locate the .zip, and extract it. Copy and paste the entire contents to the game installation directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server). You will need to overwrite all files when asked.
  5. Click Start, search Command Prompt. Right click on the Program command prompt results window, and select Run as Administrator.
  6. Use the following commands (capitalization is not necessary, spacing is):
    Windows 64-bit:
    cd c:\
    cd c:\program files (x86)\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2server -createservice -live

    Windows 32-bit:
    cd c:\
    cd c:\program files\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2server -createservice -live
  7. Once it states that Installation Complete, minimize this window. Open Task Manager (either right-clicking on the task bar, or CTRL+ALT+DEL). Navigate to the Services tab. Find h2server and check to see if it is running. If not, right-click on h2server, and click Start. If the server starts, then stops, you will need to sign out/log off your user account and log back in to continue.

  8. Start Playlist Creator. Create a variant(s) and assign maps to your variant(s), called a match. Consult the video above for more information. Once you are finished, click Save and save the .hpl playlist file somewhere like in Documents.

  9. Repeat step 5, make sure it is run as administrator.

  10. Use the following commands (capitalization is not necessary, spacing is) to log-in to the Administrative Console, connect to Live, and setup your custom playlist:
    Windows 64-bit:
    cd c:\
    cd c:\program files (x86)\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2admin -live
h2server$ live key xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx  (Your GFWL 25-char product key)
h2server$ live autosignin [email protected]        (which is your Xbox/Windows Live email)
h2server$ password:                                         (this is automatically prompted. Live password)
h2server$ confirm password:                             (this is automatically prompted.Live password)
h2server$ status                                                (repeat until it says Online-Pregame Lobby)

"playlist-file" is the directory listing to the .hpl playlist file. Like C:\Users\(User name)\Documents\Halo 2\Playlists\playlist.hpl. By default, h2server looks for .hpl files is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server\Playlists

    Windows 32-bit:
    cd c:\
    cd c:\program files\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2admin -live

h2server$ live key xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx  (Your GFWL 25-char product key)
h2server$ live autosignin [email protected]        (which is your Xbox/Windows Live email)
h2server$ password:                                         (this is automatically prompted. Live password)
h2server$ confirm password:                             (this is automatically prompted.Live password)
h2server$ status                                                (repeat until it says Online-Pregame Lobby)

    h2server$ play "playlist-file"
"playlist-file" is the directory listing to the .hpl playlist file. Like C:\Users\(User name)\Documents\Halo 2\Playlists\playlist.hpl. By default, h2server looks for .hpl files is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server\Playlists

  11. Once your account is signed in, online, and running your playlist, use status command to retrieve the running state of your server, including current game, next game, and players on your server.

  12. For ease of access to the h2admin administration console, go to the server installation directory (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server) and create a shortcut of h2admin. Navigate to the shortcut and right-click, select Properties. Under the Shortcut tab, find Target. Append "-live" at the end of the target directory. So it would look like:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo 2 Dedicated Server\h2admin.exe" -live

Apply and close out the window. Use the shortcut to gain access your Live server quickly.
  13. Consult the Read-Me file for more information and on server commands.

How to Setup a Dedicated Server on LAN mode as a Windows Service:

  1. If you have a dedicated server currently running on your computer in Live mode, you will need to end stop the server. To do so:
If the server is running as a Windows Service:
Open up the administrative console. Step 12 in the OP shows an easier to way to setup ease of access to h2admin. Once you have a h2server$ prompt, type:
    h2server$ -deleteservice -live

If the server is running manually:
You should have a command prompt window open since the manual Live server will quit automatically if closed. You can either close out the command prompt window, or type:
    h2server$ exit
  2. Click Start, type Command Prompt, right-click on the program result, and click Run as Administrator
  3. Type in the following commands (capitalization is not necessary, spacing is):
    For Windows 64-bit:
    cd c:\
cd program files (x86)\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2server -createservice -lan

    For Windows 32-bit:
    cd c:\
    cd program files\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2server -createservice -lan
  5. Start Playlist Creator. Consult step 8 in the Live guide.

  6. Click Start, search Command Prompt, and open it. Type in the following commands:

    For Windows 64-bit:

    cd c:\
cd program files (x86)\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2admin -lan

    For Windows 32-bit:
    cd c:\
    cd program files\microsoft games\halo 2 dedicated server
    h2admin -lan

  7. Once you have the h2server$ prompt, you can use similar commands, like status, play, and description. You can also use name to assign your server a new name, and ban ip to ban players by their local IP address (if you use a VPN like Hamachi or Evolve, you can use this command to ban remote players).

  8. Consult the Read-Me for more information and on server commands.
