I dont understand how to play winston. I've watched some streams and it seems like hes a constant in every pro team's lineup, but i have no clue what im doing with him.

 

 

I finally got to lv 25 (on XB1) so I'll be playing competitive soon. Zen is by far my best hero. Also play some Tracer and DVA. Really enjoy this game.

Winstons used in a "dive comp" on those pro teams. Which is a comp of highly mobile heros that all dive and attack a target, get numbers and snowball that in their favor to win the team fight.

 

Tracer and Lucio are probably other staple heros in the dive comp youve watched. Genji, solider, dva, pharah are other heros you may see in dive as well at times.

 

 

Winston is the bread and butter/the conductor/instigator of it though. Generally one of the teams best player is on Winston since he initiates the plays. Tracer will come in and help.

 

Out of position players/alone players > supports > weakest/quickest hero to kill is a general priority dive list.

 

 

Zen pairs well with dive comp too since he can harmony orb one of his divers and he can discord targets so they die faster. Just be careful of getting dived yourself.

 

If you're winston careful of an enemy hog and dva. Probably be careful of reaper after his new passive comes.

thanks for the tips. What are other popular team comps and strategies?

If people don't actively peruse dive in the picking phase people usually default to 2/2/2 in what used to be that 'standard' sense:

  • Tank - Rein, Winston is getting more popular even without the dive supplement
  • Off Tank - Dva popular at the moment, Rip Hog, Zarya if you're good with her
  • Main Healer - Ana / Mercy
  • Off Healer Lucio / Zen
  • Main DPS - more consistent hitscan so Soldier is the biggy
  • Secondary DPS - cleanup DPS usually Tracer / Genji

Mainly the thing to be looking at for outside of those two main ideas is niche map picks. For example Symmetra is a really good pick on checkpoint maps and maps with a first point choke (Eichenwalde), probably even more so on the console version.

 

Personally because of the way seasons and ranks work it just feels a lot more of a laid-back game. I just view Comp as the regular game now, the main thing is just to have fun with it and experience the different comps.

Anyone like the new map? 

It feels a bit fucky. First point has the potential to be fun with the architecture if the spawn points were a little closer for both sides, it just seems so decisive at the moment either way. Second point is standard defense lock-down 2CP with the potential for Mercy cheese Res coming out of spawn, not really feeling it as much as there's little incentive to fight over the middle ground.

 

I think the meta is a bit fucky at the moment as well. There's just so much acceptance of 3DPS, which is fine when it was a niche option but as it stands it opens people up to emotionally picking a DPS if they're faced with adversity in the other roles. 3DPS fighting especially with Reaper in the mix is just a derp fest that kind of overshadows the nuances of the other classes. Reaper and Tracer body your life up close while Soldier sits in the back and you can't pay him any attention or you get one of the million shotguns up your ass.

Agree man. I've played the least this season by far, there's just so much shitness and blame going round.

 

I hope the Doomfist changes get things back on track again.

The heaviest I grinded the game was launch. I played a bit in season 2, skipped season 3, a bit in season 4 and a lot in season 5. Every season I've played on any account at various levels have all been toxic. What do you guys feel is different this season that makes it worse?

 

Also, I try not to let medals dictate too much, especially since I have a friend who I got into the game in season 4 who pretty much has 150+ hours on D.Va already. He's constantly getting top medals for damage or elims but has limited awareness of where his team is relative to him or if we are trickling in/getting staggered etc. While I also usually get top medals I won't make a big deal if I'm on Zarya and have gold DPS... However, when I'm on Zenyatta and have 5 Golds it's hard not to rage.

This is my first season, and quitters has been my most annoying issue. Second to the Bastion/Orisa/Mercy cheesing. 

 

 

Been playing with some real life friends. We're all in gold. I'd be happy with just getting to plat this season and doing better in placement games next time around. I've learned so much and my view of the game is so different when compared to just starting out.

 

Really just want to get to plat so i get better teammates

 

Im on xbox one btw. Would love to play with some of you guys!

I'm talking purely for a PC perspective diamond - low master:

  • First dive was introduced in a big way towards the end of the last season as something meaningful that could be implemented even outside of the TOP500/GM level. Genji / Tracer come back in a big way, Widow doesn't get shit all the time. People start to get familiar with the idea of a rolling brawl rather than something structured and decisive like triple tank meta + ana + soldier.
  • Mercy coming back into the mix this season causes some difficulties. Firstly you have 'Mercy mains' for lack of a better term who crutch on the fact that she can output good healing with such little effort i.e. teammates with bad understanding of the game outside of flying to people who need healing with M1. Secondly consistent healing that is less positional allows DPS heroes to feel more freed and more accepting of triple DPS.
  • Modern triple DPS is where things start to get hairy. With the re-introduction of reaper (essentially swapping road players for reaper players), tracer and genji prominence along with soldier still good, pharah still good the already triple DPS idea was solidified. He is just another specialist ranged DPS that fits his own niche, he comes out when there's a Winston and he's basically a cluster fuck hero - run in shoot shit and cause chaos, fly away.

Basically all of the above and a few more minor details means nothing in concrete anymore, everyone wants to play their own shit and thinks it is fine to do so. Mercy mains are untouchable because they're da healers, DPS instalock duo ques don't care because 3 DPS works anyway and because of the prevalence of DPS the tank section is all fucked up, compositions can and do look like anything. Because all players are content to brawl without structure, when they fail because of the lack of structure or even just a basic composition that could form structure they instantly look to blame someone. This works doubling because in previous seasons even with blame people would try to work through a composition changing heroes within their roles, now people will just add another DPS if they feel someone isn't pulling their weight.

I'm considering betting on WC group winners. I'm thinking USA, and Russia is winning 100%, with over 2 in odds. Anybody got any thoughts about group D and H? Personally I view GBR as stronger than Germany, but im very unsure about Finland or Spain.

Not sure how knowledgeable I'd label myself but.

 

Outside of 2,2,2, there's triple/quad tank (which doesn't get played much anymore) 76/ana(+1) was common to see in it

 

and then theres "cancer comp". Which is more of a cheese comp and not used often in competitive I don't think (so your results may vary) but its very map/point specific but its Sym/Torb (sometimes Orisa/bastion added too if you want to go full cancer) on defense and the idea is to basically win the first team fight, get your tp/shield up on sym and armor from torb and snowball that the rest of the round. Honestly I won't lie, I enjoy playing it from time to time as the torb. Its a little funny to win like that.

 

Hero strats

 

Theres Mei. She can be pretty good on some points to wall off one/some of the team from the rest and you just out number them to win that team fight and shes commonly used to "stall" a point (wall off an angle to stall then when the wall comes down or they are able to get to you finally you just ice block to stall even longer). Annoying stuff for the other team.

 

Sombra is also really good on some maps that have health packs close to where the action happens that you can abuse. Not sure on the specifics of these maps since I dont play her but where I see her on - Anubis (esp 2nd point), Route 66 (esp first point), Volskya and I think its Oasis? The one with the circular drop down in the middle, high ground/boop off place one side and an enclosed mini healthpack other. Might be more but again I don't play her. If theres another sombra on the other team you'll basically be playing hackwars, or more specifically who hacks the packs first and if you lose the war you may want to consider swapping. Have fun.

@@Lazer i play Torb on defense all the time lol we do Orisa Bastion Torb Mercy its hilarious

 

 

We suck so bad on offense though its not even funny. The neutral maps we do great and we do good on defense usually. We need help bad on offense.

 

Kinda want to try 3 tanks (rein dva winston) and then 76 mercy and then ana??

Hey, so I've been betting on ow since skybet started taking them bets about 4/5 months ago. I've made more doing it than I have working actually lol Are you in the U.K.? do you use bet365? Skybet take match winners for the World Cup which is better because if any score is 2-2 it gets voided so no loss on singles an accas are still valid.

 

Also as for group winners, I would give the edge to Taiwan over USA, the Taiwanese team is Flash Wolves an they are a really damn good team to be honest.

He's a lot of fun, I like the concept of the character but I am having a hard time trying to understand all his mechanics. Landing damage with his abilities grants you armor, but how much? It decays quickly too so it's hard to constantly aware of exactly how much health/armor I have. Seems like using his ability depletes his energy for lack of a better term, or better yet he has a cap on his power meaning I can't Shoryuken into a charge attack into the ground slam because using all 3 abilities in succession costs too much energy.

 

Landing charges that aren't against the wall feels weak but I guess that's the concept. You really want to play this character around this fact and honestly that's not too hard considering all the choke points and corners at your disposal. I'm having to remind myself that it's better to not shoot at all at mid range to initiate and instead make sure I have a full clip.

 

Not really a fan of his ultimate. Not sure what else I would make it but maybe I just haven't found a counter for it. I mean he's underground and isn't effected by anything? If any other offensive hero uses an ultimate you can generally counter it but I don't think even Zarya or Mei's ultimate effects him underground. I would like there to be some risk involved that is caused by the enemy team being able to counter you and not just your biggest risk being yourself.
