Halo: The Master Chief Collection Discussion

Recommended Posts

This video is super old, but the ending is so damn entertaining, and it occurred to me that I've never really shared it. This was from our Mayhem playtesting session last March, when we discovered how much we all loved Rat Race 1 Flag. Most of the drama from the end of the game comes from there being touch return enabled, which unfortunately is not the case in matchmaking.  Share in the joy of this moment.

Loooong article about the developement of Halo (all of them, 1-5 including ODST and Reach) but it's very insightful. Some really interesting notes about Halo 1/2 and how rushed they were.

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/xwqjg3/the-complete-untold-history-of-halo-an-oral-history

I'm in the Halo 3 section right now and I swear 70% of this article has just been the same 4 guys recalling how everyone in the studio just fought with each other over their pointless game narrative. So basically (not that we didn't already know this) Halo 2 took a dive because a few nerds couldn't stay within their means or agree on the porn-tier story they wanted to overlay on top of the action. Awesome.

This Halo 4 section... this is like watching the Hindenburg take off. First they hire this one lunatic creative director out of some Japanese game studio that wants to completely blow up the game because muh vision, to 343's credit they eventually see that his shit is totally insane, off the reservation, and outside the scope of what a mainline Halo game should consist of, but in a sense the damage was done because the Call of Halo game that they ended up pushing out actually probably seemed like normal, vanilla Halo compared to that other guy's bullcrap.

God damn, Reach fucking blows dicks. I played ONE game of TU FFA after maybe 2 months of no Reach, and that's all it took to remind me just how dogshit it was.

This is TU, no less. I can't imagine having to play base Reach. Bungie had maybe 2 brain cells shared among their multiplayer development team.

It's mind boggling to think that Reach had the second highest population retention, after Halo 3. It just confirms that the vast majority of Halo players are chimps who'll play anything that has the word "Halo" on the box.

People will say "Halo 4 and 5 aren't Halo" and then turn around and say that Reach was a good game. It's obvious that these kids just jump on the "343i sucks" bandwagon of clueless social infection-monkeys. It sucks because it means that all legitimate criticism and analysis gets drowned out underneath a sea of "DAE think they should add dinos and dual wielding needlers back to MP?!!11?1". Infinite could have a 2sec minimum TTK utility, no party matching, no ranked playlists or decent progression system, godawful maps and a shit spawn system, or whatever legitimate core issues and these people would complain because the sniper rifle doesn't look like it did in Halo CE-3.

That's only because Reach rode off the popularity of H3. If you swapped the release order of H4 and Reach, H4––as shitty as it was––would have had the second highest population retention.

Doesn't refute the whole "mindless casual" argument though. In fact, it arguably supports it even further.

What are your thoughts on unpatched, or even patched Reach?

They aren't bad or ugly, but I definitely do consider them somewhat complacent and numb.

Problem is, their feedback matters more than mine does to 343i. I'm fine with them running around with ARs and banshees and promethean vision- as long as it doesn't affect the game that I have to play.

This reminds me of when halo 3 come out, MLG forums hated it, if you come up with the argument that it has amazing online numbers people would tell you well that's cos it rode off the popularity of halo 2.

Halo 4 died in like within month...  Halo reach had good numbers for like 2 years. People ain't gonna carry on playing a game they hate just because they like the one before.

I agree with you, but at the same time each game does thrive off the success of the previous title to some extent. It has to do with it's place within the market. Halo 2 held players until halo 3 released. This allowed it to supplant 2s position because the market interest was still there. Halo 3 was really just reinforcing a position that already existed.

Now, if halo 3 was bad it wouldn't have successfully maintained this, in fact that's exactly what happened with h4. Bad in this case however, refers to how h4 didn't fill the market hole when it supplanted reach. This is because it was virtually unrecognizable as a "halo" title whereas halo 3 was recognizable as such. As far as the market was concerned, it was almost as if a halo game never came out in 2012. The transition of players wasn't nearly as smooth because the market hole that halo 4 was attempting to fill, already had been by other games. Halo 3 was what people who occupied that market position were looking for. With halo 4, it was the opposite.

Can we cool it with calling people who like Reach/4/5 "chimps" and cretins etc.? It's just not very constructive.

One of my best friends' favourite games of all time is Reach. His first job was in 2010 and he saved for a monitor, Xbox and Xbox Live. Never had a console before.

Then Reach comes out and he bought it alongside a nice new Xbox, monitor and Live. He was so happy. Reach is his favourite because of the memories he had playing his first game.

It's the exact same reason Halo 3 is my favourite even though I don't think it's objectively the best. There's a lot more than gameplay that makes a game loved.

You think INSIDE has "overwhelmingly positive reviews" for it's deep gameplay?

For what it's worth, I think Reach was a very good game. Just not faithful to arena gameplay and therefore still a bad Halo in my eyes. I have my best Halo memories on Reach, even, but it wasn't because how competitive it was. I hated Ranked even though I wanted to like it. On occasion I still load up some BTB Reach and jetpack snipe on my favorite perch/exploit spots. Or when I play with my brother we spam holograms like it's going out of style and fake out the enemy every five seconds. It's dirty heresy against the Halo formula...but still so fun.

5 is also a very good game right now and a decently good Halo at that. Was so lacking at launch of course.

4 is a trash video game in general except for ProMod and the campaign story.

The game is fucked up in many ways. However, crashing is prob on your end. Ive played about 300 hours of Halo CE PC MCC with 1 crash early early on. Around 100 of these hours were on 1080ti/8700k. Lately been playing on 8700k/780 for the analogue output to a PC CRT monitor. I have run into 2 people already on MCC who don't know much about computers. So I will just throw this out there: Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, and make sure your ram is not in single channel mode/make sure the ram is in XMP/DOCP/AMP mode in your bios. These simple steps will prevent a ton of crashes. You would be surprised at how many people are running their ram at incorrect low speeds and single channel.
