September 16, 2013 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Dota 2, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced a $250,000 community-funded prize pool for The 2013 DreamHack SteelSeries Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) Championship.

EDIT; To give it some context, Dreamhack Bucharest at the weekend was $15k total prizepool and still was a success in terms of attracting the majority of top EU teams. Over 16 times that amount for Dreamhack winter should get more eyes on the weekend which in turn is more new teams, more of an international presence (US teams in particular), more sponsors.

Past couple of days I've been watching the ESLTV CS:GO matches, pretty insane games played. Im probably going to get CS:GO soon, but i was wondering how easy is it to get a game or how many people play it?

You usually find a game in matchmaking pretty quickly at low levels.

I'm from the EU but have never had issues finding a game through matchmaking other than when the servers are experiencing issues.

 

For anyone interested SLTV Starseries LAN finals is underway. Bit of a weird schedule over a number of days but essentially these 4 teams (arguably the top4 teams atm) will be fighting it out on LAN:

Update 10/10/13

GAMEPLAY

• Improved grenade physics interaction with player models. Grenades bounce off player hitboxes instead of the overall player bounding volume.
• Improved bomb-planting player animation to prevent unintentionally standing when the plant completes. (Thanks Friberg!).
• Re-added support for alternate firing accuracy. This effectively buffs burst fire on the glock and the famas.

MAPS

• Fixed minor bugs in cs_siege and de_ruins.

UI

• Added the WATCH menu
  • Watch live, in-progress matches played by highly-ranked CS:GO players
  • Access your match history and review the scoreboard for your previous matches
  • Download and watch any of your recent matches.
  • Select 'GOTV Theater' to watch a continuous stream of live matches.
• Pausing/disabling of the GOTV autodirector has been reverted to the old behavior.
• Fixed a bug that allowed you to see the other team's weapons in a competitive game via the spectator menu if you were the last person to die on your team.
• Fixed a case where spectator weapon panel would be missing the weapon in GOTV and demos.
• Fixed a case where the code version of the weapon name would show up in the freeze panel.
• Fixed the Team Value numbers not switching properly after halftime in GOTV or demo playback.
• The bomb icon is now colored in the spectator view so it's more visible.

• Fixed "Bad sequence in GetSequenceName" viewmodel console warnings.

Watched the whole NiP vs. Asana Dragons game.  What an epic match.  Forest is a beast.. too bad get right basically lost the match for NiP when he was watching catwalk but he did have some clutch plays early on.  Marik's awp was ridiculous.  And those jumping scout headshots were ridiculous.

Nah man, stopped playing 1.6 about 9months ago after switching to GO.

ESWC coming to a head throughout this week. French qualifier resolves early tomorrow then we move forward into the overall LAN finals over the following days. It might be one of the last time to see some of the top teams clash before Dreamhack Winter with quite a few having already opted out of future international competition so they can focus towards Dreamhack.

Dreamhack Winter is upon us. $250k from the communities purchase of in game e-sports items makes this event easily the biggest prize purse in CSGO to date and arguably the biggest in CS ever. 14 teams have already progressed into the main tournament in various ways, two additional teams will join them by overcoming a 64team open bracket that will run parallel to the first group stages of the tournament on Thursday morning.

Record breaking numbers in every department and the gameplay was nothing short of mind blowing. I think it's safe to say the event rose above everyone's expectations and 2014 is looking bright for Global Offensive.

• Added three purchasable gift options:
  • Gift Package - gives a random item to a random player in your match.
  • Pallet of Presents - gives random items to up to nine people in your match.
  • Audience Participation Parcel - gives random items to up to 25 viewers watching your match.
• Added the Winter Offensive Case, the first-ever community-made case.
• Replaced the eSports case with the new eSports Winter Case.

[ MAPS ]

• Added Cobblestone and Overpass maps, which are available to community servers and offline play. Official matchmaking is limited to Operation Bravo in order to collect additional map balancing data prior to a wider release.
• Fixed an exploit in Assault
• Minor bugfixes in Bank, St.Marc and Sugarcane

[ GAMEPLAY ]

• Walking into shallow water no longer makes an audible splash.

[ MISC ]

• Added a link to share downloaded matches. To access this link, download one of your recent matches, view the scoreboard from that match, and click on 'Copy Link.'

[ CS:GO SDK ]

• Fixed a Steam authentication problem when running individual CS:GO SDK tools not from Steam Library, but directly from command line.
• Fixed a bug causing workshop uploader tools to retrieve only the first 50 of a user's items.

 

Next $250k 'major tournament' has been announced! The event will take place on March 14-16th in Katowice, Poland and will be run by ESL / IEM under the EMS One banner. Previous events from the series have been some of the best in terms of production value with a fraction of the prize pool - expect great things.
