I dont understand financing for what essentially amounts to a toy. I get it for a house and affordable car (you need somewhere to live and way to get to work and most people can't get that kind of cash in a reasonable timeframe). But for things like phones or consoles or TV's etc.... no. If you can't afford to pay cash for a particular phone... maybe buy a cheaper phone? Financing isn't cheaper, it just "feels" cheaper. Get a Moto G5 and call it a day.

I agree but I'm generally a thrifty person

There are two kinds of people who finance silly stuff they can't afford imo

1. They love tech and are willing to pay extra to have it ASAP

2. People do it so they can brag and score social points

I can't imagine ever getting to a point in my life where spending $500 - $1,000 on a pair of sneakers is something I would even consider. Even if I was rolling in cash, it just seems so silly to me. My last pair of Chucks lasted me like 12 years before I had to get a new pair.

That's true but that doesn't mean the new games created won't be geared towards the newer hardware where previously that simply didn't happen. Making the games function on older hardware could be a far cry from any actual quality in this scenario. Its pretty much the essence of why having hardware upgrades for consoles is kind of stupid.

Developers would never "gear" their console software to the hardware with the lowest install base- not without some additional financial incentive.

In order to maximize profits, they need to make sure their games run well enough on the cheapest hardware- which is by far the most popular. That's where most of their development efforts will go.

You won't see nearly as much budget go towards optimizing the premium hardware. Most of those gains will be via brute strength. That's why MS put so much effort into virtualizing the oneOS- to minimize the effort developers need to make see gains on the X.

For a lot of people, the appearance of having money is more important than actually having money. Hence why so many people prefer leasing the newest and best phones, cars, and other expensive items rather than buying cheaper and saving more.

I got a new iPhone 5s for $99 about two years ago and I love it (first iPhone). I don’t know what you guys do with your phones that you need so much shit. The fingerprint scanner is a luxury to me. I don’t need to wirelessly charge my phone while I pay for my groceries with it.

65% of americans have less than $1,000 in savings. Of course the majority of people are going to opt for financing on a $500-1000 phone.

Most people wouldn't have smart phones at all without the assistance of plans.

It happens with the launch of every new console. The higher install base will be on the older console but for some games most of the dev resources are thrown at the "next gen" version. This results in a sub par B team offering for the "current gen" console.

Yeezys are culture, but most "yeezys" you'll see are fakes.

I like the saying: “All Yeezys are fake”

Basically, regardless of if they’re genuine or not most people will just assume they’re fake anyway because of the overstated/false sense of rarity or value.

I have a few pairs but there are shoes in my collection I like more, Hell I wear my vans high tops most of time. They’re just another sneaker I own which can compliment an outfit.

I swapped my bumpers out after they wore away ~3-4 months after I bought it. Shortly after, the left stick began to get stuck when pressed, and I just gave up.

This was after my previous controller's bumpers wore away.

I have next to zero trust in Microsoft accessories. The only ones that haven't failed me within a year are 360 Wireless controllers. The only wired controller I ever bought had slow turn so severe it wasn't usable.

This is legitimately my life. I have broken bumpers on 3 of my 4 xbox one controllers and while all my 360 ones still work fine. Except my wired 360 which has slow turn

That happens with every new generation- but only after the increase revenue from software sales on new systems starts to justify the shift in focus as software sales on the old systems decline.

When a new generation launches, dev focus shifts because there is a massive migration to the new platforms.

This will never be the case for the ps4/ps4pro or Xb1/Xb1X generation because the premium hardware will never outsell the cheaper. It won't even be close.

This is the mentality that drive people into massive debt.  its still debt, its still a bill that you have to pay every month with the half dozen other things that you are paying for this way.  It still means that at the time, you didn't have the money to buy the thing you wanted or you wouldn't have financed it.

We have been taught by the people that make money from this type of tactic that its a "good deal" and its "buying with other people's money". neither of which are true.

It happens right at launch. Especially in regards to first party games that exist mostly to incentivise console purchases.

I just feel as though the xbx is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Either it does so little that it hardly justifies its own existance and sells very poorly.

Or

It steps on the xb1's toes too much.

tbf a phone on payment plan is completely different than carrying debt since you arent charged interest when subsidizing it. i do this with my phones and id rather pay the 200 upfront and pay the other 500 over 2 years than drop that cash all at once since it makes no difference over the life of the phone. iirc, ms even tried something similar with the 360. its a whole different ballgame than living with massive cc debt or taking payday loans to look rich. ive seen that before when working at a bank and it must be a depressing life to know you cant afford $30 in gas bc you bought a bmw to look rich than the kia you can afford

Which is exactly why Microsoft should move to "Xbox" prebuilt PCs instead of pretending that "shitty PC" consoles are a good idea.

It doesn't happen right at launch. If you look at the start of this gen, Most of the cross-gen were hardly distinguishable between old and new gen.

With the first party, when it comes to these mid gen upgrades, they know most of their sales are still going to come from low end consumers. That's why you don't see any ps4pro or X exclusives.

If you are paying interest on small ticket items, you’re a fool.

However, why spend all the money out of pocket if they are offering (and you can qualify for) no interest financing? I use no interest financing all the time for things like TV’s. You just have to be disciplined enough to make sure it gets paid off before the promotional period expires. Silly not to make credit cards/financing work for you when you can.

Edit: Should have read the next page before responding. Anyway, your point about not being able to afford it and that’s why it was financed is just not true. Just because I make a bank’s money work for me, doesn’t mean I can’t afford something. As I mentioned above, the key here is discipline. Do a lot of people spiral into debt from this? Yes. Does everyone? Not even close.

Yes financing is designed to make banks more money and keep people in debt, but that’s only if you aren’t smart/disciplined enough to make it work for you.
