We need more discussion on Halo 5 look mechanics being tied to latency

Recommended Posts

I was going to post this a week ago but didn't. In ogre 2s chat I asked Neighbor if 343 knew about the issue and if they know what causes it. He confirmed they know about it, but have no definitive answer in why it happens.

I've heard that it's related to the dynamic resolution, frame rate, etc.

Do we have solid proof that it's related to connection?

This would be the ONLY communication I've ever seen on the issue.

I have not read or seen a single thing that "confirms" like this video claims, that it is related to the network. Not saying that I do not believe there is something going wrong with the aiming, but there has not been one shred of proof that it is the network..

In Halo 5 PC, using the FPS Hack lowers sensitivity.

There is some game logic tied to aiming and its really messing some things up and adding unneeded latency. It needs to be fixed.

This probably explains why I couldn't thrust slide when I was on 30FPS.

I live in the UK, have 2.5mbs down and 0.5 up. Which is shared with my brother. End up with 200-300 ping. In diamind to onxy.

That is exactly what the aming feels like to me. Aiming feels terrible every 2/3 games. Better when I'm home alone playing in the day time. But as I have BT internet (the isp that is messing up EU HCS) It's felt more frequent

I was totally on board with the aim tied to connection explanation, until I played with a controller on PC, which was 100% the best H5 has ever felt for me, and I don't even have that beastly of a rig. I'm keeping an open mind that dynamic resolution or something else is the issue on the Xbone, although it is interesting that mouse look seems to have issues on PC.

Thing is if this were the issue it would feel worse in warzone where the resolution changes much more often. Also, a big sign that it's due to latency is how much better and more responsive H5 feels on LAN, it's like a whole new game. If resolution or frame rate were the cause these issues would still persist on LAN but they don't.

Exactly. The problem is not the dynamic resolution. If it was; Warzone would feel horrible. However Warzone servers always feel like you're playing on LAN with how smooth and crisp the aiming feels. Warzone servers are probably the only time this game is actually using real Azure powered servers.  All in all 343 needs to figure out a way to untie the aiming from being server dependent.

I live overseas, and Warzones feels great, but Arena feels awful

What we really need is a solid test that shows beyond a reasonable doubt that this issue exists. Until then 343 can say that it is in your head and the start button pressing is a placebo effect. We need solid evidence. Discussing it won't mean anything without a video that demonstrates with solid methodology that this inconsistency exists.

For example, this is the kind of thing that 343 could explain away by saying, "you only feel that way because you're playing easier opposition".

I agree completely, problem is I'm not sure extra what equipment you would need to reliably test this. I know there's some routers out there with software that will tell you the location of the server you're connecting to but they're pretty expensive. I've actually messaged Digital Foundry since they probably have the capability to measure this type of thing but haven't heard anything back yet. I'm hoping if a thread like this takes off maybe they'll see it as being worth looking into.

This fucking post still triggers me

Hey, all!

  :ghost:

Saw Josh posting about the aiming in Halo 5 in response to some of your questions and figured it'd be a good time to lend some insight. That being said, yes, the aiming did change a little bit from Beta up until now. During the Beta, close-range gameplay felt fluid, mid-range felt decent, and long-range felt flat-out squirrelly. So, our Pro Team went through numerous tests over the course of a few months with our lead sandbox designer, Chris King, and the rest of his team in regards to how our how aim felt leading up to the release. There were some days where our entire team despised it, other days where our team had a split-decision, and finally one day where we all felt extremely comfortable with it.

Now, to be fair, we've played this game for two years, so we do have a lot more time spent getting comfortable with the movement, as well as the weaponry. Nevertheless, like any other Halo player, we all know how good our shots are when it comes to a Halo utility weapon, and that day, we felt it. Thus, after careful tweaking, constant iteration, and daily discussion, we landed on our favorite fit. It gave players the perfect blend of sensitivity across all three ranges. Yes, close-range might feel a little bit harder to control at first, but in the long run, you will all learn to adjust to it for the better. Shooting the magnum in this game is very particular, seemingly like how Killer N or StK Tupac shot their pistols in Halo 1. At first, it's going to be tough, but it will get much better with practice. Even to this day, shooting a Halo 1 pistol up-close is extremely challenging though, right?  ;)

Furthermore, since the game is running at 60FPS, and the mobility is so fast in-game, I want to reiterate that everyone of us needs to adjust to how the aim-adhesion will feel for Halo 5. It's a bit tricky at first - using a single-shot weapon to essentially swipe over an enemy as you pull the trigger feels different than before. Also, in the Halo 5: Guardians Beta, a bug slipped through the cracks that had a delayed aim-assist problem. You could swipe your reticle over an opponent, and the game would display Red Reticle, but it was after a 5ms delay. Thankfully, we were able to address that issue and fix it before launch. So now, everything should feel very smooth. Nonetheless, we are actively listening to feedback, and we are always welcome to change. So, if players do feel this strongly about the aim after a few weeks, our teams will without a doubt revisit the sensitivity curves in Halo 5.

Anyways, haven't had the chance to say it yet - hope everyone truly enjoys Halo 5 here! I know I haven't posted on these forums in quite some time, but I assure you that I'll be frequenting them much more now that the game has launched. So, as always, feel free to leave your unadulterated feedback below!

I noticed the shitty aiming the SECOND i moved the right stick launch in night campaign, and I've been still praying for a fix.

This is honestly one of the reasons I don't play as much as I'd like, just so demotivating.

Im not talking about the "heavy aim" im talking about latency, don't know why Warzone has lower latency than Arena

Probably because warzone is social as well as being the highest populated playlist so the game has no issue finding you games on servers that are close to you. In arena it's lower populated and ranked which cuts back on potential matches making it have to expand the search.

Heavy aim has gotten so much worse since launch it's kind of insane. Some games it legit feels like I'm playing on a 50 inch plasma tv when I'm playing on a 24 inch BenQ monitor.

If I'm playing nothing but Halo 5 for a week, my shot is pretty good, but I simply cannot play any other shooter, and this game whilst having the ability to shit on kids in both.

I guarantee this game would have way more active players if the aiming was solid. I've asked my casual friends what they think of the aiming system, and they say that it's "weird", at best.

Aiming would be one of the very last things that would deter casual players from playing H5 imo.

I would play Halo 5 more if the aiming was fixed, I've pretty much given up on the series these last 4 months.
