  2. So I don't play this game, but in Halo 2 Anniversary it was discovered how to make a halo 2 style spawn system with the scripting. I haven't touched Halo 5, so I don't know if it can be replicated, but here is the original post if any of you guys are curious enough to figure out if it's still a thing.   3. XBC website XBC download Since there are so many people who are going back to Halo 3 instead of playing Halo 4, I figured I might as well post this here. This thread is to be a party up thread for everybody to play Halo 1 and Halo 2 on Xbox Connect, as those games are funner to play than Halo 3. For those who don't know, Xbox Connect is a program that allows you to play non-online games online so long as they have a LAN feature in the game (both H1 and H2 do). It does this by effectively tricking your xbox into thinking that it is playing LAN, when in reality, the connection is being routed through the internet. So now that you know the good aspects, what are the problems? Well for starters, the program is a pain to troubleshoot if you have never done it before. Different routers treat the program differently, and your firewalls will consistently block the game from working, so you need to disable them while playing. Furthermore, you usually need to port forward. This is a complicated process for those unfamiliar with messing with their router settings so cT has a great guide that worked for me. If that doesn't work, this is another guide. I have never used it so I don't know how good or bad it is: http://www.westaby.net/2006/10/xbconnect-n00b-guide/ After setting it up, the next problem arises. Since the game is tricked into thinking it is on LAN, your ping drastically effects the game. Essentially, the LAG in XBC works like this: When you shoot, there is a delay of however long your ping is, between when you think you shot and when host thinks you shot. Because of this, even in Halo 2, where it is hitscan, you will need to lead to a certain extent. The ammount you have to lead depends on your ping. Anything below 100 on H2 is not terribly noticable. With CE however, since it already has lead, anything greater than 100, is hard to play for people who have never played XBC before. Eventually however, you get a feel for how much you have to lead in certain situations and XBC vets aren't hurt too much by off host. Because of the fact that host gets such an advantage on XBC, it is generally a good rule of thumb to avoid certain weapons that are already really host dependent. Basically just don't whore weapons like the shotgun all day and realize that if you won by a small margin on host, that doesn't necessarily mean you are better than them. For example, I have a friend who I have LANed with. He beat me 25-12 on prizzy. I played him on XBC with my host and about 40 ping, and he only beat me 25-21. Also, make sure you time weapons if you are going to play XBC CE. If you don't, you will get destroyed. Trust me. There are tons of timers including iPhone aps, audio files, ect... Halo 2 isn't so bad. Usually you can get a lobby (If you don't mind playing occasional columbian hosts). That is where this thread comes in.   4. Quick question. I haven't played since radar and 10 minute time limit got added to CE. Have those things been removed with the update yet?
  5. I always vote Halo 1. If Halo 1 is not available, I will vote Halo 2 BR starts. If that isn't available I will vote Halo 3 BR starts. If that isn't available, I vote for stabbing myself in the dick. If that isn't available, Halo 2 SMG or Halo 3 AR depending on map. If Halo 4 gets picked I quit. If SMG or AR starts on a shitty map, I quit.
  6. No. The point of playing 2 sets is that in a double elimination tournament, the whole point is to eliminate someone twice. If you only play one set and the person in winners loses, that person is only eliminated once. It is actually quite unfair to allow one team to lose once and still win the tournament without allowing the other team the same opportunity. You are essentially punished for going undefeated by only being allowed one loss while everybody else in the entire tournament, including those who placed last, are allowed 2 losses.
  7. I mean you could argue that adapting to wind is a skill and you can tell where it is coming from and how powerful. It could be a disadvantage, but I digress. It is small if anything.
  8. Again, we don't know how buffed the pistol actually is. It can be something really minor with a BR nerf which is why it is winning for all we know, or it could be buffed because they made the bullet magnetism stupidly high. I have never seen something come out how we ask or hope for since NB mod (even that had issues such as spread pistol and some wierd minor bugs). Even when they decided to re-release already created games that they only had to port, they fucked it up and didn't deliver on promises. How you can be so optimistic that 343i will deliver the pistol you hope and dream of is actually asinine to me. So far their track record is 10 bad decisions for every good decision at least (I would argue more). Also, the BR first bullet was not 100% accurate, but it was accurate enough that it only mattered on maps like vahalla. I think it was like 0.05 degrees or something from when someone pulled apart the code, but I can't quite remember. @MRGreen. The DMR oversteps the good at all, best at none because there is a range where it is better than the sniper on average, assuming the sniper is actually hard to use, and better than the other rifles on average.

All of my arguments are based off three fundamental assumptions to Halo design: 1) The individual must be powerful enough to make a difference consistently -The player needs a weapon off spawn that can compete directly at all ranges while being the best at none. (this is where the DMR oversteps) -The utility weapon needs a fast kill time -Players need a decent sized clip and starting ammo -Players need to start with grenades -Players need to start with all basic attributes of a spawned player. 2) Map control must be rewarded without turning into a checkmate scenario -Sprint means that without utility map control is irrelevant on small>medium maps -Not having decent effective range means that clumping is more effective than spread out setups -Maps are now larger because of sprint than they were in halcyon days 3) Randomness is inherently bad for competition (this one doesn't relate directly to this topic) Lethality is important to deal with sprint because it effectively fucks up all 3 of these points. It makes power and utility more important so that people can't just run around without consequence. It makes map control weaker by allowing someone to challenge quicker. And it makes the game more functionally random (in the sense that there are more factors that the player cannot know during play and forcing more guesswork which isn't as bad as RNG, but isn't exactly good either) Congrats, I supported them day 1 as on map weapons and added them into all forge maps I made, and badgered Eric to test them on the MLG forums. We are on the same page here. Yes it is a faster kill time overall. That is why I want Pistol off spawn. However, it is not a fast kill time at long range because of the fact that it is not designed to be effective at that range. Therefore, on average the BR had a faster kill time at mid to long range. By spawning with both, you get both kill times.
  10. Again, the randomness was a small factor. Again, my main concerns are kill time and utility. Also, I invented orange (not so different after all eh?) and supported automatic secondaries as far back as Halo 2 (the idea being to have something to button combo with off spawn) and Halo 3 (the idea being AR would be used when you ran out of ammo).

I supported the pre nerf halo 4 DMR because the BR was a 5 shot kill with almost as much spread as the Halo 3 BR and a kill time of about 1.8 seconds IIRC (essentially the slowest TTK of any primary weapon we have ever used) in a game with sprint which necessitates faster kill times to compensate. I didn't like the DMR because of it's effective range. I didn't like it at all. I liked it more than a nerf gun. When 4sk BR came out, I supported it over DMR because it was objectively the better utility weapon despite random spread. If I had then wouldn't I be supporting DMR start for Halo 5? Utility and time to kill are the most important factors for me because I think they are the most important factors for Halo. That's why I think Pistol/BR is the correct choice. It maximizes kill time more than picking either alone and maximizes effective utility. However, spawning people with a spray and pray to get spectator appeal is what everybody else is arguing it seems.
  12. That being said, we still don't know the applications or specifics of this buff or whether it will stay this way by launch. For all we know, the "buff" could be that it has ridiculous bullet magnetism now if it is a buff at all that is causing it to beat the BR out. It might just be that the BR is 5sk again or has lost most of it's bullet magnetism and that the buffs themselves are actually small. I have found that being skeptical with 343i is usually much more likely to be correct than being optimistic even when they flat out promise something good (anybody play MCC lately?). That being said, I am much more open to Pistol starts as an idea if it does turn out to be a decent utility weapon. EDIT: In fact to be honest, if it were a 4sk with no other changes it is objectively the better way to go, even if it makes the BR and DMR useless.

  14. If that is the case, I bet 343i is going to nerf it. Every time we have hoped for something in the past it has backfired on release day. Anybody else remember "Sage Merill is putting the Shadowrun rifle in Reach!" EDIT: Nevermind (unless they think that now the pistol is OP and decide to nerf it). I didn't know that tidbit. Thanks.

  16. And obviously I don't support sprint. I am just saying that because it is in the game there won't be camping in the way you are describing. Sprint destroys map control (again not a theory, we have seen this in action) unless you have a weapon effective at killing the sprinter. Is removing sprint even an option? Because it wasn't in Halo 4. Even it is, people will probably make it part of competitive settings anyway "for spectator appeal" just like the reasoning for spawning with an AR. And if we do remove sprint, then what is all this "out of the box" bullshit people are talking about? Removing sprint is way more impactful than removing the AR and I am not even suggesting to remove it. Just not spawn with it when there are better spawning weapons available.

To further this point, logically, now that almost nobody in the competitive sphere plays smash with items on, or on gimmicky stages, it should be growing at a slower pace than 2006 when MLG ran maps like rainbow cruise, corneria, peach's castle, mute city, and kongo jungle. Those casual friendly maps should have allowed 06 smash to be much more prolific than current smash. However, we see the contrary. Now that smash only has 6 stages and the meta has developed to where only 8ish characters are viable to win major tournaments rather than the 14 or so from MLG days, we have seen melee grow at a rate that is faster than it ever has. Literally nobody in the competitive sphere plays casual settings anymore and it is growing exponentially faster than when it did. It is growing faster than when Gamecubes were new, copies of melee were easy to find, and gamecube controllers didn't have to be imported from japan. Even if all that doesn't matter, look at what the most popular smash is right now. Do you think it is the new one that has brawl-ish mechanics or melee which focused on hardcore technical skill? Which one has a bigger competitive following and gets more people at tournaments? Did you guess the new one? Because if so you are wrong. Melee got over 1000 people at APEX, while smash 4 got around 700. EDIT: Rainbow Cruize
  19. If the pistol were objectively the best utility weapon I would be all for it, but this game needs utility. With the maps being bigger on average than ever, I don't think that we should be starting with a weapon that has the shortest effective range in the series (outside of H3 BR). I don't think that having a good utility is less important than starting with a spray and pray weapon either. I am going to be honest here: I don't give a fuck if casuals like the competitive settings or not. They won't, but if they did, I wouldn't care. I want the game to be objectively good as a competitive game. Not judged to be good by thumbless morons who are going to leave as soon as CoD BlackModernWarOps 27 comes out. If they are the kind of people who might like competitive settings, not having an AR on spawn isn't going to change that (especially since 343i is probably going to have non-AR start gametypes anyway). Let's be real honest right now. Do any of you honestly think sacrificing competitive merit for shitty gimmicky mechanics is ever going to make Halo successful? Because that is what we were promised since the day MLG v2 came out and I am still waiting. The one time they decided to move away from this idea was H2A which is the best Halo experience to come out since Halo 3 (arguably Halo 2). I am not talking about whether you think pistol AR is more competitive as that is a matter of taste. I mean do you think it is better to make the game objectively shittier so that people who do not care about competitive halo are slightly more likely to play? If so, I ask you this: Why did you get into competitive halo? According to the logic presented, none of us should care about competitive halo because we were all casuals at one point and out of the box settings is the only way to get us on board. That reasoning doesn't make any sense. We started playing competitively because we wanted to compete and we figured out for ourselves that Chrion TL 34 is not good for competition. We weren't driven away by not spawning with an SMG and we sure as hell weren't driven away by playing on smaller maps with a good utility weapon being the focus over pointless variety. Anybody who is the kind of person to actually want to compete will not be driven away by these things.
  20. So then in Halo 2, MLG should have used SMG starts on foundation right? And Halo 1 we should have used the plasma pistol right? And Halo 3 we should have used the AR right? And Halo reach we should have kept the game with bloom and AR starts right? Halo isn't, and has never been, like LoL, DotA, StarCraft, or Counterstrike. Those games were built to be competitive. They were designed with the same philosophies that we used when constructing gametypes for Halo since the beginning. Halo isn't and has never been designed that way. It has always been designed with the same philosophy of CoD and Smash Bros: Get the widest appeal of the casual market. CoD bans bullshit options and levels, and Smash Bros removes items and bans half the levels. If what you were saying were true, this would be the wrong way to go but I dare you to try to hold a national smash tournament with Items on High and the stage list being poke floats, hyrule temple, flat zone, big blue, and the stupid scrolling ice climbers stage. Let's see how successful that is. And before you try the old "343i says they are making this game with competitive gamers in mind" spiel, let me remind you of a fun fact: Halo 1: No focus on competitive gamers. Halo 2: Almost no focus on competitive gamers. Halo 3: Almost no focus on competitive gamers. Halo Reach: Stated multiple times that it was being made with competitive players in mind. Halo 4: Stated extensively that it was the most competitive gamer focused game in the franchise. Of course it is a fallacy. I directly stated that "if what you are saying WERE true," blah blah blah. The point was that it was based on a false presumption. That is why I made it. To point out absurdity. *States extensively that the problem with the BR is how good it is at range. *Shows a clip of a weakened enemy at mid range get his shield dropped by the last bullet hitting while the player is within the reticule *Expects that to be evidence that the BR is too good at range Also if you are going to pick and choose which of my points to pay attention to and which to ignore then we aren't having an actual debate. I assume since you completely ignored all of my reference to sprint, LOS, and Orion that you agree with me. If not please say why those points are invalid.

Also, using loadouts is too outside of expectations but spawning someone without a BR which is the primary weapon we have used for 11 years (not counting reach which has a single shot BR essentially) and caused a huge divide between BR and DMR people back when the BR was a fucking 5 shot is not?
