According to Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan, the Overwatch team at Blizzard is hard at work on new maps for their renowned first-person shooter. Three new Overwatch maps are reportedly arriving this year.
On the official Overwatch forums, Kaplan shed light on the development of new game content.
We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are “standard” maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year.
We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won’t go in QP/Comp).
We also have a few other experiments going on.
So far, the Overwatch development team has released three maps since Overwatch’s launch back in May 2016—Eichenwalde, Oasis, and Ecopoint: Antarctica. Eichenwalde and Oasis were both introduced into the game’s standard modes of play (Quick Play and Competitive), and Ecopoint was featured in the game’s Arcade section for mini games and niche modes.
With the team’s development ramping up for 2017, fans can certainly get excited for a total of six new maps to get their hands on later this year. Overwatch also recently received Orisa, the newest Tank hero for the game. Additionally, the next Overwatch hero is already very far into development.
With all of these new additions making their way through the development pipeline, it is a great time to be an Overwatch fan.
