When Rainbow 6 Siege launched back in December of 2015, if flew under the radar for most people. Most reviewers thought the game had a solid gameplay foundation, but was light on content, a trend that seems to be commonplace today in the industry. The title launched with 20 operators and a handful of maps for players to clash on. A year and a half later, the game has been entirely overhauled, in both its gameplay and perception. There are now 30 operators and 16 maps packed with tension and moments that leave you with a white-knuckled grip on your controller.
Rainbow 6 Siege also has another number to celebrate. Ubisoft recently stated in a blog post that the game has now seen over 20 million individual registered players, with, 2.3 million players signing into the game every day. The title’s Product Director, Nicolas Lefebvre had this to say:
“Our community is growing and so is our ambition to make Siege a shooter that is here to stay. The next few weeks are very exciting as it marks the culmination of Operation Health and the release of our next season set in Hong Kong.”
Operation Health was a development initiative dedicated to improving Rainbow 6 Siege in a technical aspect. While it did lead to the delay of the Hong Kong DLC, much to the dismay of fans, the initiative does show Ubisoft’s long-term commitment to the game. Ubisoft has also cultivated a successful esports scene from Rainbow 6 Siege, with this season’s finals taking place at the end of this month on August 24th. The event will also finally reveal the Hong Kong DLC which will include two Hong Kong Special Duties Unit operators as well as one Polish GROM operator.
