Season 1 for Gears of War 4 ranked play launched earlier today, resetting ranks and leaderboards, introducing a new algorithm to more accurately rank players, and bringing in a lobby system to Versus mode.
Each new season of Versus mode will last roughly three months each, before resetting to allow for re-calibration as the game’s player base gains more experience. The new algorithm employed should further enhance ranked play experience with more accurate Tier placement and skill-based matchmaking.
Starting next week, players will be able to track their progress through a Ranked Playlist overview page that will how player stats, playlist ranks, win percentage, and a clear explanation of how close they are to ascending or descending from their current rank.
Each season will culminate with skin rewards based on each player’s performance across the different ranked playlists. Each Ranked playlist will offer a skins for a specific weapon, with a different skin obtainable for achieving Gold, Onyx, and Diamond ranks. Players will earn skins based on their highest rank in the playlist during the season rather than based on their final placement to encourage players to continue to participate in each playlist without fear of losing out on potential rewards. Placing Onyx or Diamond will earn players not only the skin for that rank, but the lower rank(s) as well. The weapon skins corresponding to each playlist are as follows:
Players who completed placement matches in Ranked playlists before today (the period being referred to as Season 0) will receive exclusive rewards in time. Season 1 has already gone live with the new matchmaking alogrithim, so players may end up playing in different Tiers than in Season 1.
